Connecting Joomla to ChatGPT means giving an assistant a narrow, revocable way into your own site, so that asking for a change in plain language actually changes something. This page explains how that connection is made for Joomla specifically, and where it stops.
How Joomla connects to ChatGPT
Joomla's own Web Services API, at /api/index.php/v1, which speaks JSON:API. Nothing has to be installed: it ships with Joomla 4 and 5 and only needs switching on.
A Joomla API Token, generated against one user account under Users → Manage. There is no password to hand over, and deleting the token ends the access.
What is particular to Joomla
Two plugins have to be enabled in Joomla first — Web Services - Content, and API Authentication - Web Services Joomla Token — which is the step most people miss.
What the platform does not allow
Joomla publishes an article by default, so a state is always sent explicitly to keep new work unpublished. Joomla has no redirect API of the kind this product manages elsewhere.
Which assistants this works with
Any assistant that speaks the Model Context Protocol. That includes ChatGPT and Claude today. You connect your own account — there is no separate subscription to an AI provider through us, and your conversations stay with whichever assistant you already pay for.
Everything above describes what Joomla’s interface offers. None of it is marked verified yet, which in this product means exercised against a live installation with the date recorded.
Common questions
Do I need an OpenAI API key?
No. You connect the ChatGPT account you already have. Joomla AI Agent is the bridge between that account and your Joomla site; it is not an OpenAI reseller and does not need a key from you.
Can ChatGPT publish to my Joomla site without asking?
No. Work is created unpublished wherever the platform allows it, and publishing is a deliberate, separate step. Never changing a live site without authorisation is a rule the product is built around rather than a setting.
What happens if I revoke access?
The connection stops working immediately. The credential lives on your Joomla installation and is yours to withdraw at any time, without touching anything else on the site.
